South Dakota Paycheck Calculator
South Dakota takes nothing from a paycheck — no income tax, no local wage taxes, no employee-paid state insurance. It is one of the thinnest tax codes in the country, thin enough that half the nation's bank card industry headquartered itself in Sioux Falls because of it. This calculator itemizes the federal lines that do apply.

A tax code built as a pitch
South Dakota's empty state line is not an accident of geography; it is the state's standing offer. No individual income tax, no corporate income tax on most businesses, no personal property tax, no inheritance tax. Citibank moved its card operations to Sioux Falls in 1981 largely because of that posture, the trust industry followed, and the state has defended the arrangement ever since. For a wage earner the result is simple: the only mandatory lines on a pay stub are federal.

What fills the gap
Sales tax is the state's main instrument — a state rate a bit over 4% with municipalities adding their own — and property taxes fund the local side. Both sit near the middle of national rankings rather than the extremes, which South Dakota can manage because its budget is small. Tourism (the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, the Sturgis rally) imports a share of the sales tax base every summer.

Frequently asked questions
Does Sioux Falls or Rapid City tax wages?
No South Dakota municipality taxes income. Cities levy their own sales taxes on top of the state rate, which is where local revenue comes from.
Why do so many RVers and remote workers claim South Dakota residency?
No income tax, low vehicle fees, and residency rules that accommodate full-time travelers — a single night's stay and a mail-forwarding address can establish domicile. Whether that holds up depends on the state you left: high-tax states examine abandoned domiciles aggressively, and a paper residency can fail that audit.
Is there really no corporate income tax either?
For most businesses, none — banks and financial institutions pay a franchise tax instead. That combination, plus favorable trust law, is why a remarkable share of the country's credit card and trust business is legally domiciled in South Dakota.
What should I budget for that this calculator does not show?
Sales tax on most purchases including groceries, and property taxes if you own — both near national averages. There is no vehicle income-based fee and no estate tax. The paycheck view of South Dakota is the whole state-tax story for most residents.
